Posing for a photograph, you learn to present yourself, and later, when you see the photo, whether you like it or not, you are forced to judge your own performance. Surprise, disappointment, embarrassment: these are the first lessons in subjectivity, the first steps on the path to an unaffected self-consciousness, an identity. Photography is therefore a moral technology: it teaches you to judge yourself, to correct yourself, to keep watch.
