| 2. Expatriate

Ten years ago I left my hometown of Adelaide to live in London. Expatriate adj 1. Exiled or banished from one's native country. ~n. 2. An exile; expatriate person. ~vb. 3. To exile (oneself) from one's native country . . . I was among the expatriates . . . "South east London seemed forsaken, forlorn, on the point of collapse. It didn't seem like anywhere a person would want to be. So I learnt how to see it in fragments; a cornice, a garden, intricate Victorian brickwork in a factory wall. I learnt to love the poetic names of these begrimed streets; Dionysus Lane, Love Walk, Lavender Hill. . . but I always hated the underlying feeling of decay, and that the people here seemed forever down on their knees, trying to get up, trying to live while barely being able to afford to eat." |
